Thordon, an elastomeric polymer alloy that combines strength/stiffness with high toughness and abrasion resistance. This combination results in a line of bearing products that is capable of carrying the operating loads found in this demanding application yet are flexible enough to resist wear due to 3rd particle abrasion.
The unique polymer structure is fully homogeneous so all the properties – abrasion resistance, self-lubrication, low coefficient of friction, resistance to vibration and shock loading – are consistent throughout the entire bearing wall thickness.
The success of any bearing application depends not only on the selection of superior products but also in the correct design and use of such materials for each specific application.
Some of the application and design considerations to take into account when specifying Thordon materials for pump bearings include:
Thordon bearings can be used in a wide range of chemicals and process products that would typically affect metallic bearings. A comprehensive chemical compatibility chart for both Thordon elastomeric and thermoplastic materials is available to determine the best bearing product for the application.
For Thordon elastomeric grades, the maximum operating temperature in water is 60°C (140°F). The thermoplastic ThorPlas material has an operating limit of 80°C (176°F) in water. For applications involving chemicals at higher than ambient temperature, consult Thordon Bearings Inc.
The choice of material as well as groove configuration (grooved or ungrooved) is highly dependent on the environment to which the bearing will be exposed. For non-abrasive applications, all grades of Thordon bearings in grooved or ungrooved (except Composite) configurations are possible. When abrasives are an issue, grooves facilitate the removal of particles extending the wear life of the bearing and shaft.
Other environmental factors such as intermittent exposures to higher temperatures, chemicals, restrictions on flow, dry running, etc. should also be considered when designing a Thordon bearing.
Engineering manuals and a computer-based bearing sizing calculation program are available to assist in the design of Thordon pump bearings. The input information required, whether using manual calculations or the computer program, includes housing diameter (maximum & minimum), shaft diameter, operating temperatures (maximum & minimum), type of lubrication, shaft RPM and the duration for dry start period, if applicable. Accurate input information ensures that the final bearing design is optimal.

Corrosion is the greatest problem encountered in stainless steel structures widely used in seawater pumps - even specialised brine pumps such as those used in desalination, oil & gas, chemical, thermal and nuclear power plants.
In order to provide complete solution to customers we also offer Stainless Steel Shaft sleeves of 300, 400, Duplex and Super Duplex series. The most common shaft sleeve function is that of protecting the shaft from wear at packing and mechanical seals.
Stainless steels, which are the most widely used seawater pump material, are sensitive to crevice corrosion and require effective countermeasures against it. In severe conditions where water is highly abrasive and corrosive, we offer complete solution by providing Nickel based alloy fusion coating of Stainless sleeves, and wear plates.
